Learn about Cleocin Vaginal Cream

Cleocin® Vaginal Cream (clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream) is an antibacterial cream that contains the same drug as Cleocin Vaginal Ovules. The cream is applied to the vagina to cure bacterial vaginosis (BV)?a problem women have when too many of a certain kind of bacteria are in the vagina.

Treatment During Pregnancy

Cleocin Vaginal Ovules should not be used during pregnancy. Cleocin Vaginal Cream, however, can be used to treat pregnant women during the second and third trimester. Pregnant women should not use it during the first trimester. No studies have been done to see if it is safe to use in pregnant women during their first trimester.

Dosing

Like Cleocin Vaginal Ovules, Cleocin Vaginal Cream is applied once a day, preferably at bedtime. While Cleocin Vaginal Ovules are a 3-day treatment for BV, treatment with Cleocin Vaginal Cream lasts from 3 to 7 days (as doctor prescribed) for nonpregnant women and 7 days for pregnant women.

How to Use Cleocin Vaginal Cream

A prescription of Cleocin Vaginal Cream comes with disposable plastic applicators. They are designed to allow proper vaginal administration of the cream.

To use the applicator:

  1. Remove cap from cream tube.
  2. Screw a plastic applicator on the threaded end of the tube.
  3. Rolling tube from the bottom, squeeze gently and force the medication into the applicator. The applicator is filled when the plunger reaches its predetermined stopping point.
  4. Unscrew the applicator from the tube and replace the cap.
  5. While lying on your back, firmly grasp the applicator barrel and insert into your vagina as far as possible without causing discomfort.
  6. Slowly push the plunger until it stops.
  7. Carefully withdraw the applicator from your vagina, and discard the applicator.

Follow these instructions each night before bedtime for 3 to 7 nights as your doctor prescribes.

Cleocin Vaginal Cream Important Safety Information

CLEOCIN Vaginal Cream is used to treat infections of the vagina caused by bacteria. It can be used by nonpregnant women and pregnant women during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Pregnant women should not use it during the first trimester. No studies have been done to see if it is safe to use in pregnant women during their first trimester.

Most women found the drug easy to take. The main side effects in nonpregnant and pregnant women were itching, discharge, and pain around and in the vagina. Some pregnant women also experienced abnormal labor.

CLEOCIN Vaginal Cream is not for use in women who have an allergy to this kind of antibiotic. It should not be used for those who have had colitis or some other kinds of digestive problems.

Women who have loose stools or diarrhea after they take CLEOCIN Vaginal Cream should contact their physician immediately.

Women who are taking CLEOCIN Vaginal Cream should not have vaginal sex during treatment. They should not use vaginal products such as tampons or douche at this time. And they should not use latex or rubber birth control products such as condoms and vaginal contraceptive diaphragms for 3 days after treatment. CLEOCIN can weaken the latex and rubber.

Adverse events in nonpregnant patients

In a clinical trial of nonpregnant patients, adverse events related to clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream were reported for 20.7% of the patients receiving treatment for 3 days and 21.3% of the patients receiving treatment for 7 days.

Other events reported by less than 1% of patients included:

Urogenital system: vaginal discharge, metrorrhagia, urinary tract infection, endometriosis, menstrual disorder, vaginitis/vaginal infection, and vaginal pain.

Body as a whole: localized abdominal pain, generalized abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, halitosis, headache, bacterial infection, inflammatory swelling, allergic reaction, and fungal infection.

Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal disorder.

Endocrine system: hyperthyroidism.

Central nervous system: dizziness and vertigo.

Respiratory system: epistaxis.

Skin: pruritus (nonapplication site), moniliasis, rash, maculopapular rash, erythema, and urticaria.

Special senses: taste perversion.

Adverse events in pregnant patients

In a clinical trial involving pregnant women during the second trimester, adverse events related to clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream were reported for 22.8% of patients.

Other events reported by less than 1% patients of included:

Urogenital system: dysuria, metrorrhagia, vaginal pain, and trichomonal vaginitis.

Body as a whole: upper respiratory infection.

Skin: pruritus (topical application site) and erythema.s
