If you have an unusual discharge from your vagina along with a strong, fishy odor, or itching in the vaginal area, you might have
bacterial vaginosis (BV). You need to check
with your health care professional (HCP) because other infections, including yeast infection,
gonorrhea, and chlamydia,
may have some of the same symptoms. BV is more common than any of these. (Click here to see other symptoms of BV.)
You need to see your HCP to find out if you have BV or something else.
Don't just assume it's a yeast infection
Most women know about "yeast infections." You can buy medicine to treat yeast infections without a prescription, but
you should check with your HCP first because what you think is a yeast infection may actually be BV. BV is more
common than yeast infections in women of childbearing age, and you need a prescription to treat BV. The over-the-counter
medicines won't help.
